The Escala del Cabirol is one of the most spectacular attractions at Capo Caccia and the main access route to Neptune’s Grotto on foot. It is a long staircase carved into the limestone rock, connecting the headland to the base of the cliff and offering one of the most breathtaking panoramic experiences in the Alghero area.

Its name, which means “roe deer staircase” in Catalan, refers to its steep, winding shape, which seems to follow the agile movements of an animal making its way across the rocks.

A Unique Panoramic Route

The staircase consists of approximately 654 steps descending along the vertical cliff face of Capo Caccia to the entrance of Neptune’s Grotto. Along the way, spectacular views open up over the crystal-clear sea and the headland’s towering white cliffs.

The route is fully exposed to the sun and offers breathtaking views, especially in the morning and late afternoon, when the light enhances the striking contrast between the rock and the sea.

Difficulty Level and Useful Tips

Walking down the Escala del Cabirol does not involve any particular technical difficulties, but it does require a reasonable level of fitness, especially for the climb back up.

Comfortable shoes are recommended, along with water, a hat and sunscreen, particularly during the summer months. The return climb can be strenuous because of the elevation gain and the heat, so it is always a good idea to plan your visit for the cooler hours of the day.

Escala del Cabirol and Neptune’s Grotto

The staircase is one of two ways to reach Neptune’s Grotto, the other being a boat trip from Alghero harbour.

Choosing to descend on foot offers a more immersive experience, allowing you to admire the headland’s rock faces up close and take in the natural scenery of Capo Caccia before visiting the cave.

When to Walk the Staircase

The Escala del Cabirol is accessible throughout the period when Neptune’s Grotto is open to visitors.

The best times to tackle the staircase are early in the morning or late in the afternoon, when temperatures are milder and the light makes the scenery even more beautiful.

Where to Stay

For convenient access to the Escala del Cabirol and the other attractions of Capo Caccia, B&B Bonsai Alghero is an ideal base.

From here, you can easily reach the headland and plan visits to Neptune’s Grotto, the Green Grotto and the other landmarks of the Coral Riviera.
