Beneath the cliffs of Capo Caccia lies one of the most spectacular underwater cave systems in the Mediterranean. Tunnels, narrow passages, vast chambers and formations shaped by water over millions of years make this stretch of coastline a renowned destination for divers from all over the world.

Many of these caves are located within the Capo Caccia – Isola Piana Marine Protected Area, an environment characterised by crystal-clear waters, walls teeming with marine life and extraordinary limestone formations.

Unlike Neptune’s Grotto and the Green Grotto, which can be visited on foot with a guide, these underwater caves can only be explored during organised scuba diving excursions.

A Unique Geological Heritage in the Mediterranean

The underwater caves of Capo Caccia formed when sea levels were much lower than they are today. Originally, they were completely dry caves. As sea levels rose, they were gradually submerged, creating a unique environment where geology, marine biology and archaeology come together.

The exceptionally clear waters make it possible to admire walls covered with sponges, sea fans, corals and numerous fish species that find shelter inside these caves.

Nereo Cave

Nereo Cave is the most famous diving site at Capo Caccia and is considered one of the largest underwater marine caves in the Mediterranean.

The cave system extends for several kilometres through a network of tunnels and vast chambers, offering diving routes suitable only for experienced divers accompanied by qualified guides.

Its walls are covered with red coral, sponges and sea fans, while the remarkable clarity of the water makes the experience even more impressive.

Other Underwater Caves

In addition to Nereo Cave, the Capo Caccia headland is home to numerous other caves of great interest.

Falcon Cave

Known for its spectacular light effects and exceptional visibility, this is one of the most popular sites among underwater photographers.

Ghost Cave

Featuring more challenging passages, this cave is reserved for divers with a high level of experience and specialised training.

Deer Cave

This cave is also known for the discovery of an important fossil deposit containing the remains of now-extinct Sardinian deer, providing evidence of the area's geological history.

Marine Life in the Underwater Caves

The caves of Capo Caccia are home to an exceptionally rich ecosystem.

During a dive, you may encounter lobsters, moray eels, groupers, octopuses, nudibranchs and numerous species of small fish that find shelter among the rocky walls.

Environmental conditions also encourage the growth of colourful sponges, corals and sea fans, turning every dive into a remarkable natural spectacle.

Who Can Explore the Underwater Caves?

Diving in the underwater caves is reserved for certified divers and is organised exclusively by authorised diving centres.

The level of difficulty varies depending on the chosen site and sea conditions. For this reason, it is essential to rely on experienced guides who know the routes inside out.

Those without a diving certification can still discover the world of scuba diving by taking introductory courses or joining guided dives at easier sites.
