How to Reach Neptune's Grotto

Neptune's Grotto is located on the spectacular Capo Caccia headland, around 20 km from Alghero, and is one of Sardinia's most visited natural attractions.

There are two ways to reach the cave:

  • by boat, departing from Alghero's tourist harbour;
  • on foot, via the spectacular Escala del Cabirol staircase.

This guide explains both options and helps you choose the one that best suits the experience you're looking for.

Getting to Neptune's Grotto by Boat

Travelling by boat is the easiest and most scenic way to reach Neptune's Grotto. Boats depart from Alghero Marina and sail along the beautiful Coral Riviera, arriving directly at the landing stage located at the cave entrance.

During the cruise you'll enjoy spectacular views of the Capo Caccia cliffs, towering limestone headlands and some of the most breathtaking coastal scenery in north-west Sardinia.

Boat Trip Information

  • Departure from Alghero Marina.
  • Crossing time: approximately 40 minutes.
  • Service available mainly during the tourist season.
  • Departures depend on sea and weather conditions.
  • Boat transport and cave entrance tickets are managed separately.

Travelling by boat is particularly suitable for visitors who prefer to avoid the staircase or who would like to admire Capo Caccia from the sea.

Getting to Neptune's Grotto on Foot

The land access follows the famous Escala del Cabirol, one of Sardinia's most spectacular panoramic stairways.

The staircase winds down the cliffs of Capo Caccia, leading directly to the entrance of Neptune's Grotto while offering unforgettable views over the Mediterranean Sea.

The Escala del Cabirol

The Escala del Cabirol consists of 654 steps, connecting the top of the Capo Caccia headland with the entrance to Neptune's Grotto.

Built during the 1950s, it has become one of Alghero's most iconic landmarks and is considered an essential part of the overall experience by many visitors.

Walking Times

  • Descent: approximately 20–30 minutes.
  • Ascent: approximately 45–60 minutes.
  • Recommended total time: at least 1 hour and 30 minutes, including the guided cave tour.

Useful Tips

  • Wear comfortable closed shoes.
  • Bring drinking water, especially during summer.
  • Use sunscreen and wear a hat.
  • Visit during the cooler hours of the day.

The climb back up can be demanding during the hottest months, so early morning or late afternoon visits are highly recommended.

How to Reach the Access Point

The access depends on the route you choose.

If You Choose the Boat

Simply head to Alghero Marina, where the boats depart for Neptune's Grotto.

The crossing takes you directly to the landing platform located at the base of the Capo Caccia cliffs.

If You Choose the Escala del Cabirol

Visitors arriving by land must first reach the Capo Caccia access area, from where the staircase begins.

During the tourist season, private vehicles are not allowed on the final section of the road leading to the entrance area. Visitors must therefore use the available access system, including the shuttle service whenever it is operating.

Once you arrive at the Capo Caccia viewpoint, you can descend the Escala del Cabirol to reach Neptune's Grotto.

Booking Your Visit

If you're planning your excursion, we recommend reading our complete guide to Neptune's Grotto, where you'll find information about what to see inside the cave, its geological history and the highlights of the guided tour.

Visitors choosing the Escala del Cabirol must reserve their entrance through Alghero Experience, the official destination booking platform.

Booking allows visitors to select their preferred entrance time and helps manage visitor numbers during busy periods.

If you choose to arrive by boat, reservations for the crossing must be made directly with the boat companies operating from Alghero Marina.

Should You Visit by Boat or on Foot?

Both options allow you to visit Neptune's Grotto, but they offer very different experiences.

Choose the Boat if...

  • you prefer a more comfortable excursion;
  • you're travelling with young children;
