Neptune's Grotto, located on the Capo Caccia promontory about 20 km from Alghero, is one of Sardinia's most fascinating karst formations. It can be visited either by walking down the spectacular Escala del Cabirol staircase or by arriving by boat from Alghero’s harbor.

Neptune’s Grotto extends for about 4 km, but for safety reasons only part of it is open to the public. Speleological explorations have revealed many secrets, while other sections remain accessible only to experts. The tourist path still offers a chance to admire underground lakes, large halls, and extraordinary limestone formations.

History and Origins

The cave was formed about 2 million years ago. Archaeological findings in nearby caves show that prehistoric people were familiar with this area. Its modern “rediscovery” is attributed to a fisherman from Alghero, although it is believed that even the Romans may have known the caves, as suggested by finds in the nearby Grotta Verde.

The Fascination of Neptune’s Grotto

The 40-minute guided tour takes visitors through extraordinary natural settings:

  • Lake La Marmora – a vast underground saltwater lake with the Pebble Beach;
  • Hall of the Royal Palace – with majestic stalagmites and the Christmas Tree formation;
  • The Great Organ – the largest calcitic column in the cave;
  • Hall of Laces – with delicate formations resembling lace and embroidery;
  • Music Balcony – once used for concerts and performances inside the cave.

Natural light filtering from outside creates blue reflections on the walls, enhancing the beauty of the stalactites and stalagmites. A breathtaking experience that must be preserved carefully.

Reaching Neptune’s Grotto on Foot: Escala del Cabirol

The Escala del Cabirol (literally “Roe Deer Staircase”) has 654 steps carved into the cliff of Capo Caccia. Built in 1954 by architect Antoni Simon Mossa, it is a challenging yet spectacular path offering stunning sea views at every turn.

Practical Info

  • Descent/Ascent time: approx. 30 min down; 45–60 min up, depending on fitness.
  • Difficulty: demanding in summer due to sun exposure.
  • Tips: wear comfortable shoes, bring water and a hat, and plan your visit in the cooler hours of the day.

How to Get There by Car and Shuttle

The best starting point is the free parking at Mugoni Beach (SP55 road). From there, a shuttle service runs to Capo Caccia:

  • Shuttle: daily from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm, every hour;
  • Price: €5 round trip (free for children 0–3 years); tickets available on board;
  • Important: parking along the last stretch of SP55 is prohibited; only drop-off and pick-up are allowed.

Boat access is available from April to October (weather permitting). Tours depart from Alghero’s harbor, with a journey of about 40 minutes.

What You See Along the Coast

  • Cave entrance: tickets purchased on site (approx. €18 adults, reduced fares for children).
  • Best period: April–October, only in calm sea conditions.

The boat trip is easier and includes unique coastal views, but tours may be cancelled in case of rough seas.

Opening Hours, Duration and Tickets

  • Opening hours: April – November: 9:00 am – 7:00 pm (last entry). November – March: 10:00 am – 3:00 pm.

Curiosities

Stalactites and stalagmites in the cave take centuries to form: about 300 years are needed for just 1 cm. Some areas are inactive, while others are still “alive,” with dripping water feeding their growth. Visitors can often spot the newer, lighter-colored sections.

The cave was even used as a film set in 1978 for Island of the Fishmen, when a small boat was built inside the cave for the movie. Today, thousands of tourists visit each year, with regulated access to protect its fragile formations.

Before visiting, it is advisable to check official guidelines on clothing, restrictions, and safety rules.
